The Leaf and the Tree

story by Tania Konnerth

retold by Ute

It was a normal Summer’s day.

The big tree has stood there for decades and its branches swayed in the wind.

He suddenly heard a sad sigh.

He listened carefully and heard another one.

It came from his own crown so it must be one of his leaves.

He looked among his leaves and saw a small unhappy leaf on one of the smaller branches.

He asked: “My dear leaf what is the matter?”

Surprised the leaf almost blushed.

“Oh nothing, I am just sad.”

“But why?”

“Because I feel that I am worth nothing. I am only a very tiny leaf among thousands. I don’t mean anything to you.”

“Oh, you are totally wrong there.” The tree spoke rather loudly as he was excited.

“You are the only leaf, that can grow at this special spot. If you were not exactly there, there would be a hole. I would not be complete without you. You make me to what I am. “

The leaf blushed  – out of joy.

And this joy lasted until Autumn, when it changed into beautiful colours in competition with all other leaves.

I love that story.

I have read more of Tania’s stories to my mum and we loved them so.

You can read more wonderful stories in Tania Konnerth’s book, in German.

  1. Dear Ute, you are one-of-a-kind! 🙂

A great story to remind us we are all special, just like everyone else! Also brings to mind the Bible scripture which talks about us all being various parts of one body (eyes, ears, fingers, toes, etc) and yet each being important with a special function (paraphrased).

    Blessings and hugs!
